Art Retreat

The architecture in The Art Retreat resonates with the need to grow with nature. In an attempt to allow nature to take centre stage, with the Kabini river flowing on the North-East side, the overall planning is tucked towards the river and spans slightly over half of the four-acre site.

Drawn from the client’s aspirations of drama and dance, the overall planning includes four main structures – Studio, Dining, Cottage and Private Residence – all aligned to cater to the local climatic conditions while guiding its users to manoeuvre through built and nature seamlessly. Sitting on the edge of the river bank, tucked away from the rest, is the Private Residence for the clients has two bedrooms, living and dining. The design language diminishes walls to allow nature to flow in between each space. While the studio, dining and cottages wrap around the pool to encourage conversations amidst nature.

Conscious attempts to existing resources and bind them with contemporary ideas have been the focal point. Garnered from artistic workshops and quiet relaxation amidst nature, each block follows a similar architectural detail whilst distinctively different in function and experience. The Studio Block doubles up as an open amphitheatre for its users to enact their plays and also features a private dance studio. Large overhangs and sandy tones of the rammed earth, reinforced by the slender concrete-steel columns, set the foreground communal gatherings in the dining block.

Conceptualised in exaggerated roof forms and vernacular materials like rammed earth, each space pushing the envelope of built and nature. Tracing the concepts back to nature, the design for this art retreat offers respite to those looking to have a breather from the city’s hustle.
