Karnataka Public School

The proposed design for Karnataka Public School aims to create a learning environment emphasising outdoor play, recreation, and education experiences. The design includes lavish outdoor spaces, interactive nali-kali rooms, and opulent green pockets to provide children with an environment that fosters creativity and imagination. To balance the arid weather of the region with the need for outdoor spaces, the open spaces are fractioned and distributed throughout the site, and the building is designed to unfold into a multitude of spaces that offer different combinations of light and temperature.

The building's design battles the region's arid weather through large overhanging eaves that create shadows for temperature control, perforations that allow light to filter in, and a jaali-framed pseudo wall in front of classrooms to prevent direct sunlight entry. The building is kept fluid, with no definite borders to limit students, and pathways are clear and discernible while reserving spaces for contrasts and surprises. Lighting is given high priority in classrooms and labs, and furniture is oriented towards the east or west direction so that sunlight drapes over the tables without creating any visual obstructions. Mud walls keep spaces cool and create interesting textures, and stone flooring creates a welcome getaway from the harsh weather outside.

The design emphasizes informal spaces that combine play and work, balancing between the boundaries of the library and playgrounds, and the building slowly unfolds into unbuilt and built spaces. At first sight, the contemporary design of the building may appear as a massive built structure, but upon approaching, the building slowly unfolds itself into unbuilt and built spaces. This collaborative effort between private and government institutes will usher in a new generation of thinkers and leaders. This school will empower creativity, art, and life.
