U House

In the SouthWestern side of Bangalore rests a residence that borrows design interventions from the unhindered beauty of nature. The U abode, designed for a family of six with three generations living together, is spread across an expanse of 1200 sqm. As the home caters to a joint family, it needed to be built in a manner where they’re all interconnected without compromising their privacy. Curiosity unravels in lush gardens and simple forms as one commences from the East facing entrance through a flight of stairs enclosed by narrow stone walls.

The site's natural contours – gradually sloping from West to East – are carved out to achieve gradual shifts in the built volumes. Immediately from the main entrance with tall ceilings and a seamless craft of materials, the formal living room is separated from the informal dining and kitchen areas. All common areas on the ground floor wrap around a central courtyard where the landscaping amalgamates with the interiors– witnessed in the triple-height sunken informal living area. The residence unveils smaller pockets of landscape dotted throughout the house; for instance, the solid mass of the pooja room is broken by the softness of green foliage in front and on the ceiling. Whereas a slender void of greenery climbs vertically upwards into the lounge area on the first floor.

Ensuring openness and free flow of space, this abode is the culmination of muted colours and native textures, with the roof rendered light with metal sections along the periphery. With exceptional vantages thriving at every corner, the U abode exudes poise and charm balanced by the green vistas that cater to both outdoor and indoor spaces.
