Verandah House

Tranquillity transcends a new meaning inside the Verandah House. The residence spread across 280 sq m, is flanked by residences on either side, with the main road on the western side. Owing to the arid climate of Chittor, the residence seeks sanctuary through vernacular ideas rendered in contemporary notions.

Commencing from the entrance flight of stairs, the double-height garden space becomes the first point of entry – a sublime entrance made by simple measures. On the ground floor, the living and dining spaces open out to the garden on the Nothern side, considering the inhabitants' antrophy during peak temperatures. Whereas the angular louvres adjacent to the main staircase flood the interiors with abundant natural light, offering the required shade to the green pocket. Further back, adorning a minimalist look, the open kitchen can be closed by sliding shutters when required. While adjacent to the kitchen on the NE front, the puja room sits amidst the landscape through slatted screens, diminishing boundaries between the built and nature. To keep the heat at bay, the parent's bedroom on the opposite end is enclosed by green pockets, while a built-in seater by the window offers calm appraisal. A minimal material palette of the interiors morphs a muted background to the green hues of the landscape while the exteriors encourage a play of volumes. Overall, the verticality of the massing is intersected by the large sloping roof, where all the interior spaces find respite in the open landscape area that becomes the core of the residence. Further upwards, flanked on either side of the family area, are private areas like the master bedroom and the client’s sister’s bedroom.

The master bedroom features a mezzanine floor for a lounge area taking advantage of the varying heights of the sloping roof. Not just restrained to the common areas, green pockets have been introduced into the bathrooms to become relaxing zones. While the terrace floor accommodates semi-open areas with a cast in-situ monolithic barbeque station. The Verandah House renders a lyrical connection with nature through various spatial gestures that align with the climatic needs.
